Picture-Perfect Holiday Style: Christmas Family Photoshoot Outfit Ideas

One of the biggest questions I get from clients is, “What do I wear for this photoshoot?”

That’s totally a valid question! It is a lot to plan a photoshoot and then get outfits for each person who is involved and if there is a large group of people being photographed it becomes infinitely more challenging.

Does this sound like you?

I’m here to help! Below I’m sharing how to plan your Christmas photoshoot outfit.

Color Scheme:

When thinking about what type of Christmas pictures you want, first you need to decide on a color pallet theme.

  • Is there going to be one common color?

  • Is everyone going to match?

  • Do you want casual or formal pictures?

Some people even go as far as thinking about what room they want the pictures in and color coordinate with the decor of that particular room during Christmas time.

Traditional Christmas colors: red, green, blue, purple, burgundy, silver, gold, etc.

Coordinate With Everyone:

Now that you have decided on a color scheme, let's focus on which styles will go on each person in the photo shoot.

If children are present for the photoshoot typically the children wear patterns i.e. plaid, flannel, polka dots, etc.

Then the adults wear a solid color that matches the color that the child(ren) is wearing.

If children aren’t in the photo shoot, you can coordinate with each person in the photo shoot about what they’re comfortable wearing and what looks best on them.

If you choose to do a casual photoshoot you can wear jeans, khakis, a skirt, or anything else you feel comfortable with.

Feel free to mix-match, not everyone has to wear the same type of pants.

Layout All Outfits:

Once you get all of the outfits for the photo shoot, if possible, lay out all of the outfits to help visualize what everyone is wearing.

Take one outfit as the main outfit and work the other outfits around that outfit.

If something doesn’t look right when you lay them out, trust your gut and choose something else for that particular person. I don’t recommend changing the whole theme of outfits because that can be very overwhelming and stressful.

Ultimately, outfits are your decision, if you choose to mix-match all of the outfits, go for it. Just keep in mind that these are YOUR pictures and I want YOU to be happy with how they turn out.

Know Your Location:

  • Are you doing an outdoor shoot?

  • At a Christmas tree farm?

  • With Santa?

  • With the Grinch?

Keep in mind the colors around you and try to avoid them because you don’t want to blend in with your surroundings.

Choose a color that will stand out in front of your surroundings.

The location also brings up the topic of shoes. Christmas pictures look great with boots or any other warm, wintery shoes. I typically advise not to wear heels like stilettos due to the heel sinking into the grass or mud.
